The Right Honourable Stephen Harper
Prime Minister of Canada
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0A2

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

It was with grave concern and disappointment that we citizens of conscience, scholars, Imams, community leaders, lawyers, academics, activists and human rights and civil liberties organizations, received the news regarding your continuing refusal to intervene on behalf of Omar Khadr, the last western citizen still imprisoned in Guantánamo Bay. We are writing to urge you to reconsider that position and immediately take action to request that Omar Khadr be repatriated to Canada. The significant changes in US policy with respect to Guantánamo Bay, announced last week by President Obama, offer the Canadian government a remarkable opportunity to take action to defend Omar Khadr’s rights. Silence is no longer an option.

Topic Announcements
Announcements Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wa barakatahu,

Eid Mubarak to you and your families. As we are celebrating the Eid-ul-Adha,our brothers & sisters have been performing the Arakan of Hajj by staying in Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifa and visiting Kaba for Tawaf-e-Ifada. Throwing stones at Jamarat reminds us of our heavy task of serving our community in establishing the Deen of Allah. In this regard we are always reminded of our beloved Prophet's(Peace Be Upon Him) dua that verily our Salat, Sacrifice, living and dying are for Allah, the Lord of the universe. Our Prophet(PBUH) was the living example of the above Dua and of course, he is our role- model.

Note: With kind regards and best wishes,

Wassalamu alaikum

Rahmeth Shah

Gujarat’s Islamic Movement

Current Issues around the world I’ve always dreamed of traveling to India. The Taj Mahal, Gandhi’s liberation struggle, traveling bare-back on elephants in lush green forests; this is what India has always meant for me. I never thought, however, that my first visit would be to a state most known for its periodic outbursts of communal violence: Gujarat.

RICHARD GWYN -- Toronto Star

Most people around the world are governed by, and are affected by and are bossed about by, two governments. One government is their own. The other is in Washington.

About the only exceptions are those people who live in poor countries that are of no interest to the new imperialists in Washington. The lives of these forgotten ones are determined instead by their national dictator and by their local warlords (and also, and indeed probably more so, by their entrenched customs and culture and history).

Note: Richard Gwyn's column usually appears in Toronto Star every Wednesday and Sunday. gwynR@sympatico.ca.

Quotes

Narrated Anas: Muhammad(saw) said, "Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith:
1. The one to whom Allah and His RASOOL becomes dearer than anything else.
2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah's sake.
3. Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire."

-- Bukhari Vol 1, Book 2, No 15
